Rock Morris


Rock Morris began teaching at Brookhaven in 2009, having earned an associate degree in Visual Communications from the college. He holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in graphic design from the Art Institute of Dallas and stu​died at the University of Iowa, the University of Nebraska and the Art Students League in New York, as well as privately in Switzerland and New York City. He has worked as a professional artist in the media of pencil, pastel, charcoal, acrylic on canvas, found-object construction and murals.

His gallery experience on West 57th Street in New York City includes designing custom frames and installing shows, and he has designed and produced hundreds of exhibits for the Hard Rock Cafe worldwide. He was recruited by a Dallas advertising agency to design “out of the box” business-to-business graphics for global corporate businesses, and he has been an environmental graphics and interpretive designer for museums, nature centers and other educational facilities with another Dallas firm for several years.

Morris began his own business in 2006, specializing in interpretive design solutions for a major museum project in San Antonio. He believes that his earlier art and design experiences enable him to communicate to his students a firsthand understanding of how a balanced graphic design education and hard work can lead to a rewarding career in a creative field.

His professional experience includes interning with international artists, serving as art gallery assistant and museum exhibit designer, and working as a practicing painter and sculptor. He has shown his paintings, drawings and totems in public and private galleries, executed large-scale works of public art, worked in print and continues to do more with Web design.

He is passionate about sharing with others the ability to present “word and images” material to communicate as clearly as possible, including the proper use of typography, projecting aesthetic value and implementing universal design skills and principles. “Communication of ideas is what I know and do well,” he says, “and as an instructor, I’m able to identify which design dynamics a student does well and those that need development.” He teaches design communication and portfolio design courses in Visual Communications.
