Program Framework

This course is the result of collaboration between multiple higher education ​institutions who have worked together in support of online faculty. This course is openly accessible (public) and ther​e is no cost associated with participation. An estimated 4-6 h​our commitment is required to complete all course material.

Faculty Checklist

The Faculty Checklist is a framework (PDF - 246 KB) that outlines all major co​mponents of the Best Practices for Teaching Online course. The course consists of five modules, each comprised of 3-5 indicators from the checklist.

Course Features

The course has been designed with industry best practices in mind, filled with relevant teachi​ng and learning methodologies and provides both faculty and student perspectives via video interviews.

  1. Every module, and each indicator within it, are based off of the Faculty Checklist framework.
  2. Standard icons across modules help guide faculty through the course.
  3. Faculty interviews related to each indicator provide insight into the topic, from a peer perspective.

Student-Centered

  1. Each indicator begins with a student-centered scenario to guide faculty through the topic and help relate it to real-world expectations.

Competency-Based

  1. Each of the 5-course modules is designed so that faculty can progress through them at their own pace. Simply click the next button within a module to advance through course material.
  2. Interact with faculty across higher education institutions via engaging discussion board topics that reinforce the learning material and demonstrate competence
  3. End of unit assessments are included in each module to ensure mastery is reached. Simply achieve the required score and the next module will be released. You must pass each module successfully to complete the course and be awarded a certificate.

Expected Outcomes

Participants, via reading and rich-media content, discussion posts, and end-of-module assessments should be able to:

  • Recognize important attributes of Best Practices for Teaching Online.
  • Express and exchange ideas through discussions with peers from a variety of higher education institutions.
  • Apply the Faculty Checklist to a review of an online course.
  • Construct well designed learning objectives for an online course.
  • Reflect on material presented and relate it to the current course development process.

Successful Completion

By successfully completing a module (reading material, watching videos, and completing assessments), subsequent modules will become available. Successful completion of all five modules will result in the awarding of a digital credential. If your institution is a member of the National Institute for Staff and Organizational Development (NISOD), successful completion will also result in the awarding of a certificate through NISOD.
