An Associate of Science Field of Study in Biology degree with courses in this pathway prepares you to transfer to the University of North Texas (UNT) to earn a bachelor’s degree that opens the door to a career in research, conservation, education, biotechnology, wildlife, forensics, the environment, pharmaceuticals, and many more areas. Although there may be several options to fulfill certain requirements for the associate’s degree, please note that this pathway lists the specific courses leading to this bachelor’s degree. All plans can be modified to fit the needs of part-time students. This is not an official degree plan. Refer to catalog for official degree requirements. You must receive a GPA of at least 2.00 on all college-level course work. Students must earn at least 25% of the credit hours required for graduation through instruction by Dallas College. Contact your advisor for information. This Field of Study degree in Biology does not complete the Core.

SEMESTER 1 (Total Hours: 14)

  • ENGL 1301 – Composition I This is a (CB 010) Core course. Must earn a grade of “C” or higher.
  • BIOL 1406 – Biology for Science Majors I This is a (CB 030) Core course and a Field of Study course. A grade of “C” or higher and an overall grade point average of 2.5 is required by UNT.
  • CHEM 1411 – General Chemistry I Prerequisite of MATH 1314, or equivalent academic preparation, prior to enrolling in the course. This is a Field of Study course.  A grade of “C” or higher and an overall grade point average of 2.5 is required by UNT.
  • CHOOSE ONE:
    • ARTS 1301 – Art Appreciation This is a (CB 050) Core course.
    • DRAM 1310 – Theater Appreciation This is a (CB 050) Core course.
    • MUSI 1306 – Music Appreciation This is a (CB 050) Core course.

Students following this plan must complete all Foundation course requirements before enrollment in 3000 and 4000 level courses required for the major. Successful completion is based on achieving a C or better in each course and an overall 2.5 grade point average in these courses. The Foundation courses in this plan are BIOL 1710, 1720, 1760, 2041, 2042; CHEM 1410, 1420, 1430, 1440, 2370, 3210; MATH 1650 (equivalent Dallas College course numbers: BIOL 1406, 1407, 2421; CHEM 1411, 1412, 2423; MATH 2412).

Some 2000-level Biology courses are listed as optional electives in the plan below; these are also listed in the “Consider Completing Before Transfer” section of the previous page. Students interested in the health professions who have completed the Field of Study in Biology nevertheless should take these courses in the junior year (or earlier) in order to be a competitive applicant for medical school, dental school, etc.
