(DALLAS) — Cedar Valley College has received a $1.28 million job training grant from the Texas Workforce Commission that will benefit a transportation, warehousing and manufacturing consortium by creating or upgrading more than 800 jobs in the Workforce Solutions Greater Dallas area.
The consortium includes FFE Transportation Services Inc., KLLM Transport Services LLC, Lone Star Aerospace Inc., Syncreon American and WNA Cups Illustrated Inc., in partnership with the college.
The Skills Development Fund grant from TWC will be used to provide custom training for 859 new or current workers on industry-related topics, including focused instruction on transportation, warehousing and manufacturing. Trainees will include corporate safety engineers, drivers and help desk technicians. When they complete their training, those employees will receive an average hourly wage of $21.62, according to TWC.
“This partnership and grant will benefit both the local community and its workforce,” said Julian Alvarez, TWC commissioner representing labor. “Our labor force is among the most talented and skilled in the world, and we continue to seek and implement strategies to improve the skills of Texas workers.”
Dr. Joe May, DCCCD’s chancellor, added, “The Dallas County Community College District and Cedar Valley College understand the value of a trained workforce. Partnering with businesses in our communities to advance workforce development benefits industry, our students and the people we serve each day through the DCCCD network.”
Officials who attended the announcement, in addition to Alvarez and May, included Steve Stedman, CEO of FFE Transportation Services Inc.; Dr. Joe Seabrooks, president of Cedar Valley College; state Rep.-elect Carl Sherman; and Linda Davis, vice president of external relations, Workforce Solutions Greater Dallas.
