Eastfield's student media team brought home more than 50 awards last week from the Texas Intercollegiate Press Association's annual convention, including 20 first place honors.

Et Cetera Editor in Chief James Hartley was named Journalist of the Year by the Texas Community College Journalism Association. The award comes with a 10-week paid summer internship at the Tyler Morning Telegraph newspaper. Hartley is the first Eastfield student to win the honor.

Student journalists from across the state gathered March 22-24 in Dallas for live contests, information sessions, and the presentation of awards.

The Et Cetera won first place Best in Show for its March 7 edition and first place Overall Excellence for its website.

Hartley placed first in two of the live contests at the convention: feature writing and sports writing. Staff writer Andrew Walter was awarded honorable mention in live editorial writing. Digital Managing Editor David Silva took home a $400 scholarship.
