(DALLAS) – Today, during the monthly meeting of the Dallas County Community College District’s board of trustees, Dr. Jesus “Jess” Carreon formally resigned as chancellor.
“It has been an honor serving DCCCD as chancellor, and I am proud of the successes that our administration, board of trustees, faculty, staff and students have forged together,” said Carreon. “For 35 years, I have committed my career to educating students. Now I look forward to exploring new opportunities.”
Carreon’s resignation is effective immediately, although he will serve as a district employee until June 1. The DCCCD board of trustees has begun the process of appointing an interim chancellor to ensure a smooth transition.
“Jess has served with distinction as chancellor,” said Jerry Prater, chair of the DCCCD board of trustees. “During his tenure, voters approved a $450 million bond project to update our seven campuses; he added 47 new full-time faculty in his first year; and, in an effort to provide greater access to higher education in underserved areas of Dallas County, he pioneered a commitment to build five new community education campuses.”
Carreon was named DCCCD’s fifth chancellor in June 2003 after serving community colleges in Oregon and California as president.
DCCCD is the largest undergraduate system in Texas and has a current enrollment of more than 63,000 credit and 21,000 noncredit students who attend classes at Brookhaven College, Cedar Valley College, Eastfield College, El Centro College, Mountain View College, North Lake College, Richland College and Dallas TeleCollege. DCCCD has served more than 1.5 million people since it was founded in 1965, and each of its colleges is individually accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.
