The 210-acres of sprawling green grass, tranquil ponds, beautiful trees and established sustainability programs are earning the recognition they deserve.
Mountain View College has become the first college in the nation to achieve Keep America Beautiful School Certification. A complete team effort comprised of students from Trinidad Garza ECHS, Mountain View College and sustainability coordinator Lori Delacruz Lewis helped establish programs focused on environmental concerns and community action. The programs included anti-litter campaigns and recurring recycling events based on reuse, reduction and creation of a trash-less tree trail. This specific trail features the first known geocache component associated with any of the Keep America Beautiful Schools.
Lewis believes the recognition comes courtesy of teamwork. "I'm so proud of the leadership exhibited by Emmanuel Lozano and Brianna Lopez, who served as the first president and vice president of our Youth Advisory Council. It's been great fun working with all of the students and guiding them through their first campus-wide project. The certificates are huge accomplishments!"
To celebrate this exceptional accomplishment, Keep America Beautiful will present MVC with a Keep America Beautiful School flag and a framed certificate of achievement on Wednesday, May 1, at 3:30 p.m. in room W60C. In addition, Keep Dallas Beautiful will be providing all graduating students, who actively participated in the program, with a green graduation cord for their involvement.
