(DALLAS) — Several campuses of the Dallas County Community College District will present Black History Month observances and celebrations. Events and programs are listed below by date and college:
Monday, Feb. 14, 2011
- “Where Is the Love: For Better or Worse” — Eastfield College — A panel of local, long-term married couples will begin the week with a Valentine’s Day event for couples of all ages. The free open forum will provide a setting where students and staff can learn about individual formulas that have worked in successful marriages. The event will be held from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in room 135 of the C Building. Eastfield College is located at 3737 Motley Drive in Mesquite, just north of I-30.
- “Suspects in America: Black Man on Trial” — Richland College — Willie Holmes, RLC government faculty member, will lead a discussion on the topic from 11:15 a.m. to 12:10 p.m. in Fannin Performance Hall (F102). This free event is a conscious theater and student forum. Richland College is located at 12800 Abrams Road in Dallas.

- “Politics and the Black Church: From the Voting Rights Act to Acting Politically Correct” — Eastfield College — Free discussion; 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., room 135, C Building.
Monday, Feb. 21, 2011
- African-American Read-In — Cedar Valley College — Free and open to the general public, 12:30 p.m., room D100. Cedar Valley College is located at 3030 N. Dallas Ave. in Lancaster.
- “African-American Inventions” — Eastfield College — African-American inventions and creations that have improved lives include an ironing board, the traffic signal, blood banks and peanut butter! Mrs. Penny Jacko will share her collection with the audience and talk about the history behind each item. This free program will be held from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in room 135 of Building C.
- Black history documentary — North Lake College — The community is invited, along with NLC students and employees, to view a black history documentary film by Hudson and Houston featuring “Mighty Times: The Legacy of Rosa Parks” and “The Children’s March.” The free program will be held at noon in the Student Life Center, room H200. North Lake College is located at 5001 N. MacArthur Blvd. in Irving.

- Tuskegee Airmen — Eastfield College — Join the campus in a free presentation/discussion with members of the historic Tuskegee Airmen from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., in room 135, C Building.
- Entertainer performance — North Lake College — Entertainer and children’s author Rochelle Rabouin of South Africa (now a resident of Lewisville, Texas) will perform during a free program from noon to 1 p.m. in the Student Life Center.

- African-American Read-In — Eastfield College — Members of the campus and local communities are invited to this free program (Eastfield’s 21st annual read-in) that will pay tribute to African-American educators this year. Participants will be invited to share their special memories about a favorite teacher, instructor or professor who made a difference in their lives. The event will be held from 11:28 a.m. to 1 p.m. in room 100 of the S Building.
- Performance studies of black literature — North Lake College — Dr. Njoki McElroy, adjunct faculty member at Southern Methodist University, taught performance studies of black literature at Northwestern University for 35 years. A playwright, storyteller and performer, McElroy will discuss her experiences at noon in the Student Life Center. Free; public invited.
