(DALLAS) — In 2018, Hispanic Heritage Month coincides with the 50th anniversary of the presidential proclamation honoring Latino culture, history and contributions. Hispanic Heritage Month started as Hispanic Heritage Week under President Lyndon Johnson. The observance later was expanded by President Ronald Reagan to cover a 30-day period that starts on Sept. 15 and ends on Oct. 16.
Lectures, music and documentaries are some of the events scheduled during the Dallas County Community College District’s celebration. All events are free and open to the public unless otherwise noted.
Brookhaven College
- Tuesday, Oct. 16 — “Speak Up!” event: Discussion about the Family Separation Act, noon to 1 p.m., Performance Hall lobby.

Eastfield College
- Wednesday, Sept. 19 — Hispanic Heritage Month Pop-up Read-ins. Short readings will be scheduled at various times and locations to highlight the literary achievements of Latino/Hispanic authors.
- Tuesday, Oct. 2 — National Night Out includes the movie “Coco.” Free food is included in this family-friendly event from 6:30 to 9 p.m. on the lawn outside Building F.
- Monday, Oct. 8 — Hispanic Heritage Month Trivia Challenge, 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in rooms G-101/102 in Building G.
