DALLAS—Brookhaven College has been designated a 2018 Tree Campus USA by the Arbor Day Foundation for the sixth consecutive year.

To obtain this distinction, Brookhaven College met the five core standards for an effective campus forest management, including establishment of a tree advisory committee, evidence of a campus tree-care plan, dedicated annual expenditures for its campus tree program, an Arbor Day observance and the sponsorship of student service-learning projects.

"We are glad to be a part of Tree Campus USA because planting and caring for trees is critical to a healthy, sustainable urban environment," said Carrie Schweitzer, director of sustainability. "Not only do they beautify our campus, they also provide wildlife habitat, reduce heat, soak up carbon dioxide and mitigate stormwater runoff."

Brookhaven College places a priority on sustainability to ensure the health and future of our students and community through conservation, pollution prevention, recycling and environmental awareness.

Tree Campus USA is a national program launched in 2008 by the Arbor Day Foundation honoring colleges and universities for effective forest management and engaging staff and students in conservation goals. This year, Tree Campus USA schools have collectively planted 32,204 trees and engaged 31,682 students.
