Fifth Annual Dallas Trumpet Workshop 2019
July 15‐18

The Music Department will host a four-day trumpet workshop for advanced middle school, high school, and early college students. Classes will include warm up sessions, solo and ensemble preparation, and clinics/performances from professional trumpet players from regional and national ensembles and universities.

Biographies

Raquel Rodriquez is assistant professor of trumpet at the University of North Texas. Previously, she was assistant professor of trumpet at Tennessee Tech University. Raquel maintains a versatile career as a performing artist, clinician, educator, and scholar. She has performed throughout China, Europe, the United Kingdom, Australia, and the United States. Raquel is a member of Seraph Brass, a brass quintet comprising top female brass players in North America. The group performs frequently around the country and abroad. The group was a guest artist at the 2018 Lieksa Brass Week in Lieksa, Finland, and will be featured at the 2019 International Trumpet Guild Conference in Miami, Florida.

An active clinician, Raquel has given recitals and master classes at numerous institutions worldwide and has performed or presented clinics at conferences of the College Music Society (Southern Regional Conference), Midwest Clinic, Historic Brass Society Symposium, TMEA (Texas), OMEA (Ohio), KMEA (Kentucky), GMEA, and the International Trumpet Guild. Raquel was recently a guest artist at the Brass Day of the Melbourne Conservatorium, University of West Georgia, Berry College, Virginia Tech University, TAMU-Corpus Christi, TAMU-Kingsville, Michigan State University, Luther College, University of Kentucky, and the University of North Carolina-Pembroke. Raquel's scholarly activities have resulted in articles published in the Instrumentalist Magazine and ITG Journal.

Raquel has been a prizewinner at the International Women's Brass Conference, National Trumpet Competition, and at brass band competitions in North America: NABBA and the U.S. Open Brass Band Competition. Raquel has performed as soloist with the Bryan Symphony Orchestra, Topeka Symphony Orchestra, the UNT Symphony Orchestra, the Tennessee Tech Symphony Band, the Fillmore Wind Band, Frank Simon Band, Lexington Brass Band, Athena Brass Band, Fountain City Brass Band, and the Southern Stars Symphonic Brass Band. In 2013, Raquel recorded "Cincinnati Virtuosity – The Cornet Solos of Frank Simon and Herman Bellstedt," which is available on Amazon and iTunes. She is a clinician for the Conn-Selmer and Denis Wick Companies.

Raquel has served as an adjudicator at the National Trumpet Competition and International Trumpet Guild (ITG) Conference. Active in the ITG organization, Raquel is the editor of the Trumpet Technology Column in the ITG Journal and serves on the board of directors. Raquel co-hosted the 2018 Trumpet Festival of the Southeast and the 2014 International Women's Brass Conference.

She holds a Doctor of Musical Arts in trumpet performance from the University of North Texas, where she studied with renowned trumpet pedagogue Keith Johnson. She earned a master's and a bachelor's degree in music education from West Texas A&M University, where she studied with David Ritter.

Adam Hayes is an internationally recognized performer, educator, and clinician. A versatile musician, Adam has performed throughout North America, South America, Europe, and Asia, including performances with over 40 professional orchestras throughout the world.

With an interest in new music and creative music, Adam endeavors to promote the latest in solo trumpet repertoire. He has four feature albums to his credit. Adam actively commissions new works for trumpet by a variety of composers. He has given the world-premiere performances of 13 significant works for trumpet. Adam was a featured artist at the 2012 and 2014 International Trumpet Guild Conventions.

Adam has published articles and reviews for music publications, including the International Trumpet Guild Journal. Adam's book, "In Theory: The Trumpet," is a trusted resource in the collegiate trumpet studio.

Adam has performed with professional ensembles including the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, Atlanta Opera, Atlanta Ballet Orchestra, Cincinnati Ballet Orchestra, Cincinnati Chamber Orchestra, Hollywood Festival Orchestra, Hollywood Hills Orchestra, New Mexico Symphony Orchestra, Santa Fe Symphony Orchestra, Chamber Orchestra of Albuquerque, Dayton Philharmonic, West Virginia Symphony, Kentucky Symphony Orchestra, Richmond Symphony, Chattanooga Symphony, and numerous regional orchestras.

Adam has been a soloist with the Ringling Bros. Barnum and Bailey Circus and has performed on studio-recording and commercial engagements from cruise lines to Broadway shows. He has performed with notable artists such as Diana Krall, The Indigo Girls, Bela Fleck, Mannheim Steamroller, Edwin McCain, Joan Osborne, Neil Sedaka, New York Voices, Renee Fleming, Chris Potter, and John Cowan. Several of Adam's solo, chamber. and orchestral recordings have been broadcast on radio and television, including features on National Public Radio. He can be heard on labels including ACA, 5ive Happiness, Curvepoint, Hal Leonard, and Mark Records.

Adam is an associate professor of music and the chair of the Department of Fine Arts at Berry College in Rome, Georgia, where he maintains a competitive trumpet studio. He serves on the board of directors for the Trumpet Festival of the Southeast and is an adjudicator for the National Trumpet Competition. Adam is a past president of the Georgia Association of Jazz Educators and served as host for the 2013 Trumpet Festival of the Southeast.

Adam holds a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music, a Master of Music from the University of New Mexico, and a Bachelor of Music from the University of Georgia. Adam is an artist for Eastman and Shires Trumpets.

Tom Williams, a native of Baltimore, has led a sparkling and varied career since he began studying trumpet and drums as a child. His talent was recognized at an early age by many, and he began working steadily on both trumpet and drums while still a high school student.

After matriculating at Towson State University, Tom joined the renowned Duke Ellington Orchestra under the direction of Mercer Ellington, with whom he played the national tour of the Broadway smash "Sophisticated Ladies." He also toured Japan with the road company. In 1987 he enlisted in the U.S. Army and served eight years as a featured soloist with the "Jazz Ambassadors" and "Army Blues "jazz ensembles. In 1991 he was a finalist and second place winner in the first Louis Armstrong International Jazz Trumpet Competition sponsored by the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz.

A versatile performer, Tom has played in the show bands of Pattie Labelle, Liberace, Anita Baker, Sid Caesar, Joe Williams, Stevie Wonder, and Rosemary Clooney, among others. He has appeared at numerous jazz festivals and venues with artists such as Donald Brown, Hank Jones, Philly Joe Jones, Gary Bartz, The Vanguard Jazz Orchestra, The Carnegie Hall Jazz Band, Michel Legrand, Ben Riley, Steve Wilson, The Woody Herman Orchestra, Frank Foster, Antonio Hart, Slide Hampton, and Steve Turre.

Tom has recorded with Rob Bargad, Gary Bartz, Donald Brown, Antonio Hart, Jimmy Heath, The Heath Brothers, Larry Willis, and Steve Wilson. He can also be heard on the theme music for the PBS television shows "Washington Week" and "Motorweek." He is mentioned in the book "The Trumpet Kings" by Scott Yannow, which chronicles the history of jazz trumpet players. As a leader on trumpet, Tom has recorded two CDs, "Introducing Tom Williams" and "Straight Street," on the Criss Cross Jazz label.

As a drummer, Tom has performed with Curtis Fuller, Larry Willis, Javon Jackson, Kenny Drew Jr., Gloria Lynn, and Geoff Keezer. He is leader of InterPlay, which has recorded "First Time" and "Pick Up The Pieces" on the JazzScapes label. Tom served as the jazz drum set instructor on the faculty at Howard Community College from 2009 to 2011 and is currently the jazz trumpet instructor at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County. He is the 2014 recipient of the Benny Golson Jazz Master Award.

Oscar Passley has served on the faculties of the Elan International Music Festival, University of Kentucky

Summer Trumpet Institute, Blast of Brass Summer Festival, Tarrant County College (Northwest campus),

Northlake College, Collin College and co-founder/host of the annual Dallas Trumpet Workshop.

Currently, Passley is the faculty coordinator of the music department at Eastfield College and Lecturer of

Trumpet at the University of Texas at Arlington. He is sought after as an adjudicator and clinician

throughout the state and nation conducting clinics and workshops at schools and festivals including the

Dallas Music Educators Association Jazz Festival, Tarleton State University Jazz Festival, Southwestern

Oklahoma State University Jazz Festival, Baltimore County Public Schools High School All Honors Jazz

Concert, National Trumpet Competition Jazz Semi-Finals and the International Trumpet Guild Jazz

Scholarships Competition. In addition, he has also been a guest artist at numerous colleges and

universities throughout the country including Mountain View College, Richland College, Missouri State

University, Northeastern State University, Southeastern Oklahoma State University, Oklahoma Baptist

University, Texas Wesleyan University, Texas A&M University at Commerce, University of Dallas, Texas

Christian University and Baylor University.

Equally proficient in both classical and jazz genres, Oscar Passley has performed with groups such as the

Price/Wright Jazz Orchestra, Kitchen Sync Big Band, Rizpah Lowe Jazz Quartet, Alexandria’s Ragtime

Band, Bourbon Street Stompers, Inner City All-Stars Brass Band, Eastfield College Faculty Jazz Combo,

Texas Star Brass Band, Las Colinas Symphony, Garland Symphony, Arlington Symphony, New

Philharmonic Orchestra of Irving, Chamber Orchestra of Denton, Voices of Change, Metropolitan

Classical Ballet Orchestra, and was Co-Principal at the 2008 Missouri Symphony Summer Festival. He

also has been performing with the Dallas Opera Orchestra since the 2005-2006 season.

Oscar Passley has shared the stage with such notable musicians as Andrea Bocelli, Denyce Graves,

Michael Sachs, Scott Hartman, Elizabeth Freimuth, Gladys and "Bubba" Knight, Louis Price (former lead

singer for the Temptations), Heather Headley, "Bebe" Neuwirth, B. J. Thomas, Bowling for Soup, Rebirth

Brass Band, Steve Lippia, Benjamin Wright, Winard Harper, Regina Carter, Bobby Sparks, Keith

Anderson, Brad Leali, Tony Baker, Byron Stripling and Wynton Marsalis.

A native of Baltimore, Maryland Passley graduated from Morgan State University with a B.A. in music

where he studied trumpet with Melvin Miles. He finished master degrees in trumpet performance

(M.M.) and music education (M.M.E.) in 2004-2005, studying jazz trumpet with Mike Steinel and

classical trumpet with John Holt at the University of North Texas. Dr. Passley holds a Doctor of Musical

Arts in trumpet performance at UNT.

Brian Walker is Assistant Professor of Trumpet at Tarleton State University in Stephenville,

Texas. Dr. Walker has taught previously at Southeastern Oklahoma State University, the

University of North Texas and The Florida State University as well as privately in the Dallas/Ft.

Worth Metroplex. His students have been accepted into many undergraduate and graduate music

programs throughout the United States. He currently teaches a full studio of twenty music major

and non-major trumpet players at Tarleton State.

Dr. Walker holds degrees from the University of North Texas (DMA), The Florida State

University (MM) and Southeastern Oklahoma State (BM). His primary teachers include Michael

Miles, Iskander Akhmadullin, Christopher Moore, John Holt, Keith Johnson and Adam Gordon.

As a performer he has appeared with many groups in the DFW region including (but not limited

to) the Dallas Wind Symphony, the Dallas Opera, Plano, Allen, Arlington, Las Colinas, Irving,

Garland, and Dallas Chamber Orchestras. He has also had the opportunity to perform with the

North Texas Symphony Orchestra, Chamber Orchestra, and the Grammy Nominated UNT One

O'Clock Lab Band. While at Florida State, Dr. Walker performed with the Tallahassee

Symphony, Pensacola Symphony, and New World Symphony to name a few. As a soloist, Dr.

Walker has given recitals in Texas, Oklahoma, Mississippi, Georgia, Florida in the United States

and Mytilene, Greece, Sao Paulo, Brazil and has performed throughout France.

Dr. Walker is active in the International Trumpet Guild as a contributor in the Music Review

section in the ITG Journal. He is also an artist and clinician for the Bach division of the Conn-

Selmer Corporation.
