(DALLAS) — Bringing information and inspiration often are part of TEDx presentations. Mountain View College will present its own event, TEDxMountainViewCollege, to promote education, learning and discussion on Tuesday, Feb. 5, from 6 to 9 p.m. in MVC’s performance hall. Mountain View College is located at 4849 W. Illinois Ave. in Dallas.
Tickets are $12 for the general public as well as faculty, staff and students from across the Dallas County Community College District. (Free student ticket sales end Jan. 31.) Purchase tickets at TEDx Mountain View College 2019 - eventbrite.com.
The program will be hosted by Demetria Obilor who serves as the traffic ensemble anchor for ABC affiliate WFAA-TV in Dallas. Obilor reports road updates and the latest trends in social media weekdays from 4:30 to 7 a.m. and also anchors the station’s noon midday show on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.
During the event, participants will watch two TEDTalk videos and also will hear speakers who will help audience members spark a conversation about how to make a difference in their own lives and the lives of others.
Four DCCCD employees and a student are among the evening’s speakers; their topics are listed below:
- Courtney Brazile, MVC speech communications faculty member, “Diversity in an Un-Diverse World”;
- Jarred Davis, MVC’s executive director of human resources, “Find Your Voice Through Powerful and Perennial Words”;
- Dr. Erin Kelley, English faculty member from Richland College, “How Law Stigmatizes Rape Victims”;
- Dr. Hurshel Burton III, English faculty member from Brookhaven College, “Erasing the Stigma of a Community College Education”; and
- Manisha Shrestha, MVC international student from Nepal, “Overcoming Adversity Through Art.”
Other speakers and their topics include:
- Diego Corzo, millennial entrepreneur from Austin, “Can the American Dream Be Achieved if You’re Not American”;
- Laurie Gabriel, teacher and documentary film producer, “Live Your Life Through the Eyes of a Child”;
- Tro’juan Henderson, performance poet, “Harnessing the Power of Hip-Hop”; and
- John Holiday, singer/countertenor, “The Monsters Under My Bed.”
