This past February, four DCCCD students were hand-picked to visit Washington D.C. in order to discuss the ways our government aids community colleges through funding.
One of the four who visited the nation’s capital was MVC student Eduardo Hernandez. The sophomore was chosen to represent MVC by executive assistant Michael Arredondo and faculty member Steve Billingslea. Eduardo currently serves as vice president of public relations for PTK and can also be found working part-time in the President’s Suite. Two students from North Lake College and one from El Centro joined Eduardo on the trip.
The highlight came when the students were able to meet one-on-one with Texas Senator John Cornyn, U.S. Congressmen Marc Veasey and Lance Gooden. The DCCCD student representatives also had time to visit Congress, the Library of Congress, Supreme Court, and Capitol Hill. When all was said and done, the trip left quite a mark on Eduardo.
“It gave me a chance to boast how community college has made me a better and more confident person and leader. We need to keep funding for programs at the community college level that can be beneficial for current and future students,” Eduardo said. “We learned legislators know the statistics, but what they remember are the stories. That’s something that they can take home with them and share.”
On Tuesday, March 5, Eduardo was given the chance to convey to the DCCCD Board what he learned during his trip.
