Brookhaven College student, MinFang "Coco" Yeh, has been named a 2020 Oberndorf Scholar by Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society and received a $1,000 scholarship.
Coco is vice president of Alpha Delta Pi, the Brookhaven chapter of PTK. She is pursuing an associate degree in business at Brookhaven and plans to transfer to a four-year university when she graduates in May to pursue a career in marketing.
"I want to be a fundraiser at a nonprofit and raise money for those who need it. Throughout my life, my parents have helped others however they were able to - like giving money to charity and supporting children through donations." Coco said. "I want to be someone like them. I think this society has helped me a lot, so I want to be someone who gives back to help others."
Rebekah Benavides, student life office coordinator and PTK advisor, said she encourages the members to utilize the benefits available through the honor society including access to over $90 million in scholarship money.
"I am excited to be selected for this scholarship," said Coco explaining the submission process for the competitive scholarship. "You fill out the application and it is submitted for multiple scholarships instead of just one. Then you are given a question to write an essay on based on your academics, leadership and financial need."
She is one of seven students selected internationally to receive the scholarship which is designed to help PTK members overcome financial barriers preventing the completion of their first college credential, associate degree or certificate, according to a PTK press release.
Up to 15 Oberndorf Lifeline to Completion Scholarships are awarded annually with scholars selected in both the fall and spring each year. Students may apply for the next round of scholarships beginning in March.
