(DALLAS) — With Scholarship Week beginning today, the Dallas County Community College Foundation is poised to offer a variety of financial packages that may help students with their educational pursuits. But to receive aid, students must apply first.

The DCCCD Foundation offers more than 400 scholarships annually. However, there are some myths about who qualifies, and that often tempers the interest of prospective and current students, said Pyeper Wilkins, chief of advancement initiatives for the foundation.

"We have scholarships available for students of all ages, at every location, and for a wide variety of programs," Wilkins said. "Some require that students have a certain grade point average or have financial need, but many do not have those kinds of requirements. Our system will automatically match students with the scholarships for which they are eligible, so all students should apply."

Of the 400 scholarships, there are about 80 that have no applicants, officials said. Scholarship Week is May 4 through May 8, and district officials hope to get the message out to both current students and those interested in attending one of the district's seven colleges.

The deadline to apply for Fall is June 1.

"We are working to make sure more students are aware so that they can apply before the deadline," Wilkins said.

The DCCCD Foundation provides scholarships all year long. All scholarship recipients are subject to DCCCD and federal financial aid regulations.
