(DALLAS) — Nurses rule at Brookhaven College.
Dr. Mark Meyer, dean of health occupations/nursing at Brookhaven, recently learned that BHC’s associate degree nursing program has received a full, two-year approval from the Texas Board of Nursing with a commendation. The commendation was based on the fact that Brookhaven College nursing graduates earned a 91 percent pass rate on the NCLEX-RN examination for 2009.
The report stated, “The faculty and administration are commended for the graduates’ 91 percent pass rate on the 2009 NCLEX-RN examination. Credit for the success of the program is attributed to the students for their commitment to hard work; the admissions process for selecting strong candidates; the faculty who teach the nursing and support courses; and the academic rigor of the nursing program.”
Meyer congratulated faculty and administrators as well for their good work. “It’s great to be part of such a successful program,” he said. Brookhaven College is part of the Dallas County Community College District.
(DALLAS) — Dr. Wright Lassiter Jr., chancellor of the Dallas County Community College District, recently received the 2010 Alpha Legacy Community Service Award from the Xi Tau Lambda chapter (Dallas) of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc. The award is part of the annual Alpha Legacy program, which brings together supporters of the Sankofa Foundation’s public policies and service programs, which focus on youth mentoring in the community.
During the past 20 years, the Sankofa Foundation has launched several programs that have contributed significantly to the quality of life in the African-American community; those programs include academic scholarships; the “Go-to-High-School, Go-to-College” motivational campaign that promotes academic excellence at Paul Laurence Dunbar Learning Center; Project Alpha, a partnership that addresses teen pregnancy from the male perspective, in partnership with the March of Dimes Foundation; and an alliance with both the Boy Scouts of America and Big Brothers/Big Sisters that helps to increase participation of fathers and other male role models in the lives of children.
(DALLAS) — Randy Conine of Richland College is one of the best of the best — a 2010 Minnie Stevens Piper Professor. Only 15 college and university faculty members in Texas receive the annual statewide teaching award, which honors each Piper Professor for her or his efforts in the classroom and provides each winner with a $5,000 honorarium.

Conine, a professor of English and peace studies at Richland, said that he strives to inspire students as he teaches them to think critically.
“I am mindful, when I’m teaching to improve critical thinking skills, that I also am teaching subjects that can nurture growth in ethical character,” he said. “I try to speak a ‘language of enthusiasm,’ calling students to critically but compassionately engage in matters of deep moral concern: human rights and social, economic and environmental justice.”
The new Piper Professor first received Richland’s 2009 Excellence in Teaching Award before he was nominated by the college to compete statewide for a Piper Professor award — a tradition that RLC reserves for full-time faculty members. He also delivered this spring’s commencement address at Richland.
