(DALLAS) — During the regular monthly meeting of the Dallas County Community College District’s (DCCCD) board of trustees on Tuesday, members elected a new chair, Charletta Rogers Compton. Compton, who has served as a DCCCD trustee since 2000 for District 7, succeeds Jerry Prater of Garland, who has been chair of the board for 11 years. Compton is the first ethnic minority to serve as chair of the DCCCD board.

 

Prater thanked other board members for their work over the years as he informed them that he did not wish to serve as chair again. “I wish to continue to serve this district and our students as a dedicated member of this board,” said Prater. “However, I think it is time to pass the reins to another member as we begin our work with a new chancellor to continue to move this district forward in the academic world and as a leader in workforce and economic development.”

 

After her election as the new chair, Compton said, “I am pleased to serve as chair of the DCCCD board of trustees, and I look forward to the work we will do to meet the board’s primary goal: to educate our students. I also want to thank Jerry Prater for his service as board chair. I look forward to continuing to work with him to move the district forward.”

 

Compton earned her associate degree from Mountain View College and her bachelor’s degree from Dallas Baptist University. Compton also earned certification as a contract compliance administrator. She previously served as vice chair for the DCCCD board of trustees from July 2010 to June 2012. She also has served as chair of the DCCCD audit committee and as a member of both the DCCCD trustees’ planning and budget committee and the board audit committee. Her term expires in 2018.

 

The new board chair has served in a number of community roles. Past service includes: member of the Dallas Black Chamber of Commerce and on its Commerce, Convention and Tourism Advisory Committee; president of the Kimball United Neighborhood Association; parliamentarian for the Southwest Dallas Neighborhood Association; member of the board of directors for the Dallas County Heritage Society; and member of the Diversity Committee for the Association of American Community College Trustees.

Compton has earned a number of honors and awards as well. She is the recipient of the Helping Hands Award; received the Heritage Award from the Dallas County Heritage Society; was named to the DFW Minority Business Development Council by Minority Business News (1997); and received the Women Who Mean Business Award (2000) from Minority Business News.
