(DALLAS) — Future accountants, business leaders, real estate brokers and mortgage bankers were among more than 30 students inducted recently in the North Lake College Delta Psi chapter of Alpha Beta Gamma International Business Honor Society. North Lake College and Townview Business Magnet School students joined the academic honorary — the first time for any high school student and the largest group to date for the chapter.

Alpha Gamma Beta International Business Honor Society was established by business professors in 1970 to recognize and encourage scholarship among two-year business and professional college students. AGB inducts members from accredited junior, community and technical two-year colleges. The society is a member of the Association of College Honor Societies and has initiated more than 65,000 members.

The North Lake College chapter was formed four years ago and inducted a total of 57 members during its first three years.

Lorena Briceno plans to become a mortgage banker. After the ceremony, the North Lake College student said, “It’s actually a great honor to join, and it’s a good opportunity for me to get ahead in business with the exposure I get, being part of Alpha Beta Gamma Honor Society. I’m very proud. It’s been a difficult journey, but I’m going to complete it!” Briceno credits the chapter’s adviser, Keith Baker, for talking to her about mortgage banking as a career. She has one year to earn a designate certificate and then six additional courses to receive her associate degree in mortgage banking.

Another North Lake student, Mohammad Taslim Reza, is majoring in computer engineering and minoring in finance. He will transfer to the University of Texas at Dallas, where he already has been accepted. He said, ”It’s definitely a great honor to be involved in this organization, which will inspire me in the future. It will really help me do even better (in school) than I’ve done now.”

Diana Gutierrez, a first-generation college student, actually attends the Townview business magnet school; she is a dual credit student who currently is focusing on managerial accounting. She eventually wants to attend a university but may first enroll at one of DCCCD’s community colleges to earn her associate degree. “Receiving this certificate from Alpha Beta Gamma is a great honor — not just because I can put it on my resume but also because it’s just a great opportunity to have been chosen to be part of this community,” she said.

Ivan Perez, also a student at Townview, wants to major in finance and eventually become a lawyer.

Ivan Perez, who also is a first-generation college student at Townview, is president of the National Honor Society and his senior class, too. He has applied and been accepted at Texas A&M University and also is considering Babson College, Fordham University and Texas Christian University. “As a first-generation college student, I think you have to value every opportunity that is given to you. It gives you a platform to demonstrate that you’re a leader now and that you have to do things for other people, not just yourself,” said Perez, who wants to major in finance and eventually become a lawyer.
