- Two Dallas County Community Colleges faculty members recently were
named Piper professors by the Minnie Stevens Piper Foundation. Doris
Wilson of El Centro College and Dr. Ken Alfers of Mountain View College
were two of only 15 faculty from across the state who were designated as
Piper Professors. Nominees from two- and four-year institutions across
Texas compete for the award, which includes a $5,000 honorarium,
certificate and commemorative pin. The award recognizes well-rounded
faculty members who are devoted to their profession and who have had a
special impact on students and the community.
Wilson, a
technology faculty member at ECC, said, “I teach with the hope that I
help (and not hinder), enlighten (and not confuse), inspire (and not
discourage). I, too, am a student because my students teach me so many
things about life and living from their personal perspectives. I am
enlightened and motivated by different experiences they bring to the
classroom and are willing to share with all of us.”
Alfers, who
has been a faculty member at MVC since 1972 and who also received the
Lifetime Achievement Award in Distance Education this year from the
Instructional Technology Council, said, “It is gratifying to be
recognized by a statewide organization like the Minnie Stevens Piper
Foundation, which emphasizes teaching and dedication to students and the
profession.”
Both faculty members were honored during college graduation ceremonies in May.
