Celebrate music, drama, dance, fine arts, and literature throughout
April during the annual Literary & Fine Arts Festival April 3 - May 3.

The “Speak Easy” Launch Party will kick-off the 2018 Literary & Fine Arts
Festival by celebrating the winners of the League for Innovation Student
Literary Competition, the rebrand and relaunch of The Alternative (Eastfield
College’s student-produced visual art and literature magazine), and featuring
an interactive public artwork by Tierra Firme.
The League for Innovation Student Literary Competition Award Ceremony
celebrates winners in the categories of poetry, fiction, essay, and one-act play.
The winners will participate in the EFC Student Readings afterward.

Haiku Workshop

Explanation, demonstration, and then on-hands workshop on how to write
a haiku (three-line poem with 17 syllables, 5/7/5 syllable count), with the
goal of creating haikus for the Haiku Wall.

This free outdoor dance concert features work from the dance department’s
technique classes (ballet, modern, and hip hop), as well as work from selected
student choreographers. Hosted by the Eastfield Dance Company.

The Et Cetera's Poetry Slam

Students are invited to compete for prizes by reading or performing their
original poetry. Sign-up starts at 5 p.m.

Gallery Show: H. Schenck

H. Schenck’s work explores the inherent potential of various materials, such
 as foam, fabric, wood, and found objects, “using the discovered traits as a
language.” In "Runaway Boy," he makes use of seemingly disparate objects
and materials, “each acting as a single word within the context of a sculptural
 sentence. The result is an exhibition/narrative about deconstructing the
human experience.”
Exhibit continues through May 11.

Lecture: Pass the Camera: Reflecting on Photojournalism by Kael Alford

Photojournalist and documentary photographer Kael Alford will present her work 
and discuss her professional trajectory over 20 years, the shifting journalism landscape, 
and her own changing perspectives on photography and teaching photography as tools 
for social impact. Alford, who also teaches news photography at Eastfield, has documented 
political conflict, underrepresented communities and cultural identity in photographs that 
have been published in magazines and newspapers around the world. Her work from Iraq 
is included in the book and exhibition "Unembedded: Four Independent Photojournalists 
on the War in Iraq."

Join Kerian Massey for a journey to the creative side. The versatile East Texas artist will 
show the important role creativity plays even in areas not traditionally associated with 
it and offer strategies to access your inner artist.

Play: Anna in the Tropics
7:30 p.m. • Performance Hall
"Anna in the Tropics" is set in Florida in 1929 in a Cuban–American cigar factory,
where cigars are still rolled by hand and "lectors" are employed to educate and
entertain the workers. The arrival of a new lector is a cause for celebration, but
when he begins to read aloud from "Anna Karenina," he unwittingly becomes a
catalyst in the lives of his avid listeners, for whom Tolstoy, the tropics, and the
American dream prove a volatile combination. (Evening classes can bring their
students for free, but will need to RSVP in advance of the performance dates).

Lecture: Digital Scholarship by Cody Jackson

The Digital Scholarship Committee presents speaker Cody Jackson. His digital
humanities project seeks to recover the poetry of Jim Wheeler, who, in 1997,
ended his life after immense anti-LGBTQ bullying, harassment, and violence.
Using digital methods, Jackson explores the ways in which Wheeler and many
queer people perform the act of archiving and resistance in their everyday lives
and carve space for queer identity in “public” spaces.

April 25
Spring Juried Student Art Exhibition
Reception 11:15 a.m.-12:15 p.m. • Gallery 219
Exhibit of artworks by students currently enrolled in studio art courses at Eastfield
College. The exhibit features a variety of technical and conceptual art practices in
ceramics, drawing, design, painting, photography, and sculpture. Juried by Dallas
artist H. Schenck.
