"Distinguished" was definitely the theme for Alpha Delta Pi chapter at the Phi Theta Kappa annual convention, Catalyst 2019 in Orlando April 4-6.

Brookhaven's chapter received multiple awards representing the highest honors a chapter can achieve at the international level. PTK has more than 1,200 chapters in the U.S. and around the world.

  • Nneka Chidy Nnaji was recognized as a Cengage Unlimited Scholar and walked in the scholar parade

Officers included in the Distinguished Chapter Officer Team award presentation were Austin Butler, Sohyun Jun, Nneka Nnaji, Ousmane Thioune, Maria Tovar and Carlos Valbuena. Teams are nominated by chapter advisors and chosen based on demonstrated teamwork, leadership abilities, engagement with PTK programs and enthusiasm for the hallmarks of the society including scholarship, leadership, service and fellowship.

"Working with Phi Theta Kappa can be challenging and life changing in so many ways. I am always amazed and inspired by our students every year," said Rebekah Benavides, PTK advisor. "Not only do they take their PTK responsibilities to heart and overcome obstacles with grace and determination, but they do this on top of their academics, work, and other commitments. I am honored that I get to work with this awesome group of students."

 

Advisor, Rebekah Benavides and nine Alpha Delta Pi officers and members attended the event and had the opportunity to engage in fellowship activities with other chapters and have a little fun by visiting some of the Orlando theme parks. DCCCD Chancellor, Joe May, was also present at the awards gala on the final evening of the conference.

Alpha Delta Pi also captured awards and recognition at the regional level. The PTK Texas Regional Convention was held in Houston March 7-9.

The chapter was also recognized as a Five Star Chapter and for participating in Honors in Action and College Project.

Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society is an international organization that recognizes academic achievements of college students. PTK provides opportunities for individual growth through leadership, service and fellowship according to the organization's website.
