DALLAS—Witness an astronomical event that only occurs every five to 10 years as Mercury crosses the face of the sun Nov. 11 at Brookhaven College. The phenomenon will not be visible from north Texas again until May 7, 2049.
As Mercury passes between Earth and the sun, the planet can be seen against the sun's disk. Most people will need an optical aid to see the transit of Mercury. Brookhaven College Astrophysics Department and the Texas Astronomical Society of Dallas will have binoculars and telescopes equipped with special filters to safely view the event.
Never look directly at the sun with unprotected eyes.
Plan to attend the transit of Mercury, Nov. 11 from 6:56 a.m. – 12:04 p.m. in the plaza between buildings K and X. To find out if the weather will affect the viewing, call the Astronomy Hotline at 972-860-4301.
