Et Cetera Editor in Chief Aria Jones has been awarded the Buster Haas Minority Internship from the Texas Associated Press Managing Editors.

Aria will work for the El Paso Times this summer. The award comes with a stipend and scholarship.

"Aria has worked very hard in both the classroom and the newsroom, and it's great to see that work pay off," said journalism program coordinator Lori Dann. "The Buster Haas internship program provides a fantastic opportunity for students to get hands-on experience in a community newsroom. As someone who got my own start at small daily and weekly newspapers, I am excited about this chance for Aria to immerse herself in the daily grind of community journalism. I believe it will prepare her well for a successful future in the industry."

Aria, who is secretary of Eastfield's Phi Theta Kappa chapter, has also been named a semifinalist for national Cooke Undergraduate Transfer Scholarship. Those awards will be announced in April.

Aria plans to transfer this fall to study journalism and Spanish. She has applied to the University of Texas at Austin, Southern Methodist University, and New York University.

This is the second year that an Et Cetera editor was selected for an internship in a statewide contest. James Hartley worked at The Tyler Morning Telegraph in summer 2018.
