(DALLAS) — For students who need help developing basic skills, obtaining a GED, improving language skills or enrolling in a job training program, there’s a new mobile application from the Dallas County Community College District that can help.

The WorkReadyU Student Success App assists both current and prospective adult learners with class schedules, orientation dates and referrals to social services. Simply download the app and swipe left!

“This population of adult learners comes to our DCCCD classrooms with different challenges, compared to those of traditional learners,” explained Merrill Redfern, an instructional specialist in adult education and literacy for DCCCD. She added, “This app will help those students overcome communication barriers. The app also helps support retention, which leads to success for our adult learners.”

“We want to help adult learners who are new students when they walk in the door as well as those who are already enrolled,” said Kevela Kirby, career navigator and program services coordinator at Richland College.

“This (app) is another means of communication for students,” Kirby said. “Students know that I have an open-door policy, and I do my best to provide great customer service. I’m not always in my office, but the app gives them accessibility, no matter where I am.”

Richland has about 30 students who currently use the mobile app, but the service is available at all DCCCD colleges.

“We give referrals such as child care or tips from the Texas Workforce Commission on job opportunities, for example,” Kirby said. “This service lets our students know that we are here for them.”

Access to services and tracking educational needs is crucial to student success, added Redfern. “This app says, ‘How can we help you?’ This effort is about providing quality customer service for our students, and it helps build trust.”

To download the WorkReadyU app, visit the Apple or Android app store and search for WorkReadyU. For more information about the Richland College GED program, please contact Kevela Kirby at 972-238-6098 or at kevelakirby@dcccd.edu.
