(DALLAS) — A new memorial at El Centro College lights up blue in honor of five police officers killed and several others injured during a shooting on July 7, 2016.
Created by Dallas-based artist Ryder Richards, the piece is comprised of a strip of blue lights, marking the entrance where the suspect ran to escape police after the shooting rampage.
“It’s part memorial and part shrine. It can help us move forward as a beacon for our community,” Richards said.
A nearby plaque now features the names of the fallen and injured, including Dallas County Community College District officers Sgt. Bryan Shaw and Sgt. John Abbott.
El Centro President Dr. Jose Adames addresses attendees at the installation ceremony for the new memorial.
“In the days and weeks following the tragedy, the community and college district came together to say we are better than this, Dallas is better than this. We are ‘El Centro Strong’,” said El Centro College President Dr. Jose Adames.
“We are one Dallas yesterday, we are one Dallas today and we are one Dallas tomorrow,” said Dallas Police Deputy Chief Albert Martinez.
The addition was funded by El Centro College and Downtown Dallas Inc.
