(DALLAS) — Veterans who are transitioning from the military to civilian life often encounter challenges others never face. But getting into college or finding a job or a referral for medical resources shouldn’t be among them.
Dallas County Community College District is hosting a Military Connected Resource Fair that will help veterans with education, employment, medical and other needs. The event is free and will take place Thursday, Sept. 12, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Cedar Valley College, Building M, 3030 N. Dallas Ave. in Lancaster. There will be a variety of agencies and experts there to talk about programs and services.
Several different educational benefits are available for military-connected students. College Credit for Heroes is a partnership that makes college accessible to veterans and awards them with college credit for their military education experience. Through grant funding from the Texas Workforce Commission, student veterans and active military can earn college credit for training and courses they received in the military. And, veterans can use their GI Bill benefits to take credit courses. The GI Bill is an assistance program that provides up to 36 months of education benefits to those who have served on active duty and meet the requirements.
“We’re building pathways for all of our service men and women,” said Reggie Szatny, senior manager of grant projects in DCCCD’s Military Connected Services Office. “The goal is to connect veterans, their dependents and their military-connected community to these agencies.”
Moving back into civilian life can be a challenge for some veterans, he said. With assistance, veterans can build on their skills, launch new careers and gain degrees, he said.
Vendors are required to register for the event.
