(DALLAS) — Dallas County Community College District students will soon be able to earn an associate degree all for having their heads in the “cloud.”
DCCCD's board of trustees approved four of the district’s colleges, Brookhaven, El Centro, North Lake and Richland, to offer an Associate of Applied Science degree in cloud computing. The degree designs a career pathway for students in the high-tech field of computer technology, effectively preparing students for industry certifications in Salesforce Cloud, IBM Cloud and Azure. Also included is Amazon Web Services, an area where DCCCD already has apprenticeships.
“This is just another way DCCCD is setting students on the path toward success,” said Dr. Joe May, DCCCD’s chancellor. “Cloud computing is revolutionary technology, and we are excited to offer a degree in this high-growth area that is also experiencing significant job demand in the Dallas-Fort Worth workforce.”
Cloud computing is the delivery of on-demand computing services — from applications to storage and processing power — through a cloud services platform via the internet with pay-as-you-go pricing.
”This is an area that is desperately needed, not only here, but around the country,” said Mark Hays, DCCCD’s vice chancellor of workforce and economic development.
Students will receive a foundation of knowledge and technical skills for entry-level employment opportunities in the cloud computing field. Cloud-related jobs include software engineers, software architects and data engineers.
The degree is expected to be offered beginning Spring 2020 based upon approval by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board.
