(DALLAS) — “Sustainability as a Social Justice Practice: Developing Resilient Strategies” is the theme of Dallas County Community College District’s ninth annual Sustainability Summit scheduled for Friday, Nov. 8, from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Eastfield College, 3737 Motley Drive, in Mesquite.

Presentations will focus on various aspects of how to enhance and maintain livability and quality of life in Dallas County and the world.

The event is free and features a variety of speakers and breakout sessions. DCCCD has long supported initiatives that identify problems and solutions for a healthier and more sustainable future. The goal is to implement sustainability in all aspects of life, said Georgeann Moss, the district’s executive administrator of sustainability.

“DCCCD uses the United Nations 17 Sustainable Development Goals as a teaching and learning tool to illustrate the idea that sustainable solutions are good for people, the economy and the environment,” Moss said.

“The goals are designed to ensure that our children and theirs will be able to enjoy an excellent quality of life. This conference will showcase many action steps people can take in their own lives to makes these goals a reality. By working together, we can accomplish these goals by 2030.”

The one-day program will feature keynote speaker Ian Garrett, an associate professor at York University in Toronto. Garrett, a designer, educator and researcher in the field of sustainability and the arts, will address the intersection of sustainability, social justice and resilience.

The summit will also include additional speakers and breakout sessions and feature more than 20 exhibits.
