Mountain View College's fifth annual TEDx conference welcomed an audience of over 370 attendees on Tuesday night. The special event, hosted by WFAA-TV anchor Demetria Obilor, is meant to spark conversation within the community and bring about impactful ideas as presented by a lineup of speakers. While on stage, each speaker was tasked with delivering a particular thought or message.

In all, nine speakers took center stage inside the Performance Hall over the span of three hours, and the District was well represented. Over half of our guest speakers call DCCCD home:

  • Courtney Brazile, MVC speech communications faculty member, "Diversity in an Un-Diverse World";

  • Jarred Davis, MVC's executive director of human resources, "Find Your Voice Through Powerful Words";

  • Dr. Erin L. Kelley, English faculty member from Richland College, "How Law Stigmatizes Rape Victims";

  • Dr. Hurshel Burton III, English faculty member from Brookhaven College, "Erasing the Stigma of a Community College Education"; and

  • Manisha Shrestha, MVC international student from Nepal, "Overcoming Adversity Through Art."

The leadership of Alice Rios Shaw, MVC assistant director of marketing, and Ke'Ana Bradley, MVC's director of Student Life, helped to bring 10 months of planning to a fruitful close. Alice Rios Shaw had this to say about the event, "The night was about bridging information and inspiration. Our speakers did that beautifully. The 5th anniversary of TEDx Mountain View College was a huge success, thanks in great part to an engaging and appreciative audience as well as all of the volunteers and committee members who offered their time and talents to make it a memorable event."

Preparations for the next TEDx event in 2020 are set to begin shortly.
