DALLAS—It's a quintessential tale of betrayal and temptation complete with a candy encrusted gingerbread house, a wicked witch and of course a happy ending, in this classic marionette production of "Hansel and Gretel." Theatre Brookhaven presents a modernized version of this timeless fable directed by master puppeteer, Michael Robinson, March 5-14.
"This upcoming performance of 'Hansel and Gretel' is pretty special," said Darise Error, theater professor. "The set and puppets were part of Sky Highchief's international touring marionette theatre with backdrops and scenery done by MGM artists back in the 1940s."
Error said the vintage sets and puppets are on loan from Dallas Puppet Theatre and the Brookhaven production is their first appearance since the 1970s.
The original two bridge, 15-foot wide stage has complete set changes and a split bridge with a turntable on which the candy house appears. The technical elements of the show were groundbreaking for their day, according to Dallas Puppet Theatre.
