Mountain View College officially received a $247,223 skills development fund grant from the Texas Workforce Commission on Friday, Feb. 21. The grant partners MVC with the Owens Corning Irving roofing and asphalt manufacturing facility to help train a new generation of Owens Corning employees.
The grant will help MVC provide specifically-designed workforce development courses which will train current and future employees for Owens Corning's Irving production facility. MVC will use the grant to provide customized training for 168 Owens Corning workers, with focused instruction on manufacturing. Trainees will include electricians, operations leaders, and senior engineering specialists.
The Irving plant focuses on asphalt and roofing; the roofing division produces enough shingles to roof an entire average-sized home in just 90 seconds.
"Mountain View and the Texas Workforce Commission have been working together to provide workforce and skills development training to local businesses for 13 years," MVC President Dr. Beatriz Joseph said at a ceremonial check-signing on Friday. "During that time, we have impacted the lives of more than 1,700 people through hands-on training and soft skills development. Through this grant, we will be adding to that number of well-trained individuals in our community."
Dr. Joseph was joined at the presentation by TWC commissioner Aaron Demerson, Workforce Solutions of Greater Dallas president Laurie Bouillon Larrea, Owens Corning Irving site leader David Kenna, and MVC executive dean of workforce and economic development Patricia Webb.
The Texas Workforce Commission Skills Development Fund is Texas' premier job-training program, providing local customized training opportunities for Texas businesses and workers to increase skill levels and wages of the Texas workforce.
