(DALLAS) — Representatives of the Dallas County Community College District recently received funds from Follett Higher Education Group Inc. that will be used to provide book loans to DCCCD students who need them. Follett executive Allen Stratman presented a $350,000 check to DCCCD officials as provision of an eight-year bookstore services contract with the district that will help lower the cost of textbooks for students and also provide them with money for book loans.
The $350,000 “up front” payment for book loans is one of three key elements in the contract. The contract contains two other provisions that will help students:
- DCCCD will accept lower commissions from its book sales in order to lower the price of textbooks; and
- Follett will provide an additional $50,000 annually to the district for student scholarships.

“We place a tremendous amount of emphasis on lowering the cost of textbooks for DCCCD students,” said Steve Ledford, district manager of auxiliary services, whose responsibilities include the bookstores on all DCCCD campuses. Ledford accepted the $350,000 from Follett, along with Dr. Wright Lassiter, DCCCD chancellor, and Ed DesPlas, the district’s vice chancellor of business affairs.
(DALLAS) — The Board of Nurse Examiners for the state of Texas has announced that the organization will continue full approval status for the Brookhaven College associate degree nursing program. Based on the 2006 annual report for the program and on the 2006 NCLEX-RN examination pass rate of 100 percent, the board also issued a commendation: “The faculty and administration are commended for the graduates’ 100 percent pass rate on the 2006 NCLEX-RN examination.” Those passing rates on the exam represented 28 of 30 students who started in the fall 2005 class, which comprises a 93 percent retention rate for the program, said Juanita Zapata Flint, executive dean for Brookhaven’s health and human services division and the dean of the nursing program. Brookhaven College is one of seven individually accredited institutions in the Dallas County Community College District.
