(DALLAS) — Celebrating the Fourth of July and the Trinity River Corridor will create a festival atmosphere during the Trinity River Fiesta on the weekend of June 30 and July 1, 2007. With fireworks, food and fun on the menu, participants from across the Dallas area are invited to attend the free, two-day event — especially families who want to spend time meeting and sharing the celebration with other community members.

The event will be held both days at Victory Park (2500 Victory Ave., Parking Lot E). The fun starts Saturday at 11 a.m. and concludes following a 9 p.m. fireworks display; hours on Sunday are noon to 6 p.m. Key community sponsors for this event include Dallas County Community College District, Mercado Bilingue, Citibank, Victory Park, Southwest Airlines, 93.3 The Bone, The Ticket Sports Radio, Telemundo and KXAS-TV. DCCCD is also a community partner for the event with the city of Dallas and the Office of Special Events, Dallas City Council members, Dallas Design and Arts Districts, the Trinity River Project Community Committee and local Trinity River-area organizations.

Steve Salazar, city of Dallas council member, is serving as honorary Trinity River Fiesta chair; honorary co-chairs for the event are Texas Sen. Royce West and Texas Rep. Roberto Alonzo. Other honorary event leaders are DCCCD Trustee Martha Sanchez Metzger; Pauline Medrano, city of Dallas council member; and Jerome Garza, Dallas Independent School District trustee.

Special features and activities for the event include:

  • A family health fair with special medical screenings, services and education;
  • A children’s area with fun and educational activities;
  • Outdoor water conservation and environmental education;
  • An art pavilion showcasing the best of multicultural artistic talent from the Dallas/Fort Worth area;
  • A DCCCD education pavilion;
  • An entertainment stage for musical and other performances;
  • Food and artisan booths;
  • Other family-focused activities for children of all ages; and
  • Fourth of July fireworks fiesta celebration.

“The Dallas County Community College District is excited to be a major sponsor for the Trinity River Fiesta as well as a participant. We want to share our excitement for education with others who come to our pavilion, and I am honored to serve as one of several chairs for this outstanding event,” said Metzger, who has served on DCCCD’s Board of Trustees for three years.

Participants presenting activities during the two-day event include city departments; arts and cultural organizations; health service organizations; children’s, youth and education organizations; public libraries; literacy and sports youth programs; corporate and consumer sponsors; major media partners; restaurants, food and art vendors; and others.

A portion of the proceeds from the festival will be contributed to participating community organizations: Trinity River Mission, Los Barrios Unidos Community Clinic, La Voz del Anciano, the American Heart Association and the Batann Center. The success of the fiesta also has an impact on community education concerning the Trinity River Corridor Project; revitalization of recreational areas; environmental, water and electricity management education; community economic development; and transportation infrastructure developments.
