12:30 to 2 p.m. — Eastfield College kicked off activities early with a workshop and lecture on the Constitution, presented by EFC faculty members Phoenix Rousseau, Jerry Henson and Carlos Rovelo.

11:30 a.m., Student Services Center (Building S), Lobby — Dr. Justin Wert, assistant professor of political science at the University of Oklahoma, will discuss “The Persistence of Politics: Rights, War and Constitutionalism.” A reception will be held after the event.
- Monday, Sept. 17, 2007 — El Centro College
Noon to 12:45 p.m., Student Center — Patriotic music will be performed by Jerry Jones’ students, followed at 1 p.m. by a live video feed of retired Gen. Colin Powell leading a national recitation of the preamble to the U.S. Constitution. (This year’s recitation will be dedicated to and honor U.S. military members around the world.) Popcorn and drinks will be provided.
- Monday, Sept. 17, 2007 — Mountain View College
11:15 a.m. to 12:20 p.m., Room W38 — MVC government instructor Jonathon York will lead an interactive discussion titled “The Constitution Matters.” The event is free and open to everyone.
- Monday, Sept. 17, 2007 — North Lake College
Noon, Cafeteria — Student Programs and Resources (SPAR) has planned a student talent show for entertainment and will distribute information about the U.S. Constitution.
- Monday, Sept. 17, 2007 — Richland College
10:10 to 11:05 a.m., Room 103, Sabine Hall — Student Programs and Resources has invited guest speaker Dr. Jose Uganga to address the importance of the Declaration of Independence. Uganga, noted author and former attorney general under the Jimmy Carter administration, is a native of New Mexico and a graduate of New Mexico State University. He received his law degree from Georgetown University and his master’s degree from the University of Texas at San Antonio. His novel “Buenavida” captures the essence of the Hispanic experience in the American Southwest.
In addition to the program, RLC is sponsoring an essay/CD contest on the topic “The President’s War Powers in the Constitution.” Two students will receive best essay or best CD honors. Students who attend Uganga’s presentation will receive free copies of the U.S. Constitution.
- Tuesday, Sept. 18 — El Centro College (theme: celebrating the right to free expression)
11 a.m., green space in front of the college — ECC students, faculty and staff will read entries for the poetry “slam.” 1 to 5:30 p.m., Student Center — Freedom-of-expression activities are scheduled, including voter registration, music, art, an open mike, food and prizes. All day, Building B (second floor) — Fashion students will display their works.
