(DALLAS) — Parents who need a little help with summertime fun for their children can find solutions at several campuses in the Dallas County Community College District. From music to mathematics, art to drama, computers to cooking — and more — check out offerings at Brookhaven, Eastfield and El Centro colleges below.


Brookhaven College

Youngsters and their parents who are searching for activities can find an exciting list of options at Brookhaven College for classes that are designed to motivate and challenge children of all ages to achieve success — to make learning an adventure. New courses are offered each week from June 9 through Aug. 16.   

General subject areas include cooking ($170); first aid and CPR ($40); languages (Arabic, French, Italian, Portuguese and Spanish, each $150); art ($120); computers (animation, comic graphics, Web pages, digital photography, iMovie and video game making, $150 each); music group instruction for guitar or piano (prices vary); navigation to middle school ($90); science (several classes/prices vary); theater and acting ($120); creative writing ($90); and Musikgarten for very young children (prices vary). 

Some fun examples are provided below:

  • Cooking for Junior Chefs (ages 11 to 17) — Cooking can be fun for children of all ages. By experimenting with a variety of foods, students will discover how to prepare healthy meals, snacks and even desserts! Students also will enjoy using their own creativity to compile a recipe book.  (Two sessions)

  • Creating Comic Graphics Using Illustrator (ages 11 to 17) — Students will learn to use Adobe Illustrator as a tool to create their own graphics for comics so that they can create, color and transform objects. The program lets users blend shapes and colors, layer and order objects, and even add three-dimensional effects.  (One session, July)

  • Video Game Making Online (ages 11-17) — This instructor-facilitated online course will teach students how to modify their own arcade-style video games. They will learn how to control characters, objects and outcomes in their games and then increase the difficulty levels and add more features. Students can participate in this class at home using their own computers or in a school computer lab.  (Two sessions)

  • Mad Science (ages 10-13) — Join other students on a mission through the amazing world of science as you use experiments to create your own slime, build a magic crystal garden, learn how lightbulbs work and much more.  (Two sessions)

Eastfield College

Eastfield College summer programs and camps will educate and entertain youngsters from age six months (swimming only!) and up.

  • Waterbabies — The Eastfield College swim class for Waterbabies (age 6 months to 4 years) and their parents starts June 9. Choose from classes that start at 11 a.m. or 4 p.m. Class meets Monday through Thursday and continues through June 26. A parent must be in the heated pool with the child at all times; one adult per child. Register under the child’s name through the Eastfield College Admissions Office at (972) 860-7102; tuition is $75 for the course.

  • Summer arts classes — The Eastfield Summer Arts Program will present selections from the musical “The Lion King”; daily classes in acting, singing and dancing are open to interested children and young adults ages 9 to 17. Class will be held Monday, June 16, through Saturday, June 21, from 1 to 4 p.m.; cost is $200. The resulting performance, which is open to public, will be staged on Saturday, June 21, at 3 p.m. in the Eastfield Performance Hall.   • Summer SWIM — Eastfield College is offering Summer SWIM; each session comprises four classes per week over a three-week period (12 course hours). Classes are offered for babies 6 months of age through teens. The schedule includes: Session I: June 9-June 26; Session II: June 30-July 17; and Session III: July 21-Aug. 8. Classes are held Monday through Thursday; morning and afternoon classes are available. The cost to enroll is $75. Learn to Swim classes for children ages 7 and older will also be offered on Saturdays, June 7 through July 26, at 1 p.m. Finally, Saturday Beginners and Advanced Learn to Swim classes for adults are offered at 11 a.m., June 7-July 26, also for $75.   • Eastfield College Home School meetings — Eastfield parent/student meetings and registration will be held on Saturday, June 14, at 9 a.m. in C118 and also on July 19 or Aug. 23. Parents must attend one meeting that will cover both summer and fall 2008.   • Eastfield Metroplex East Piano Festival (including piano camps) — Pierrette Mouledous, director of Eastfield’s piano department, has assembled an impressive faculty of educators with specialty in piano performance to teach two week-long camps. Instructors will focus on elements of stylistic interpretation and technique from classical, jazz and liturgical piano repertoire for students ages 7 and up; tuition starts at $75. An audition on June 18 or 23 from 2 to 4 p.m. is required for intermediate and advanced workshops, which are offered June 25-28.

    A highlight of the festival is the guest performance of Rick Andrews, who has achieved national recognition as a performer of solo and concerto repertoire. He has received high honors at major competitions and festivals, and he was named a gold medalist in the International Piano Recording Competition, which is sponsored by the National Guild of Piano Teachers. Andrews began his college training as a student at Eastfield College. He has earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in piano performance and piano pedagogy from Southern Methodist University and received a doctorate in musical arts/piano performance from the University of Colorado. Currently, Andrews is director of keyboard at Augustana College in Sioux Falls, S.D., where he teaches applied piano, piano pedagogy, piano literature and music theory.

El Centro College

High school students from across Dallas County have signed up to participate in a number of specialized programs at El Centro College. These programs include:

  • eXtreme Techno Camp — In its third year, eXtreme Techno Camp gives students a chance to learn about emerging technologies. Participants can earn college credit as they learn to build a blog, use Google tools and make their own music videos with film they shoot. Students also will learn to program visual reality using Alice. Extreme Techno Camp is open to high school juniors and seniors who have passed all portions of TAKS. Classes are offered from 9 a.m. to noon or 1 to 4 p.m. in the Technology Center on El Centro’s main campus in downtown Dallas.

  • TexPREP — The Texas Prefreshman Engineering Program returns this summer. TexPREP is a mathematics-based summer enrichment program designed to identify achieving middle school and high school students who are interested in science, technology, engineering and other mathematics-based fields and who want to increase their potential for careers in these disciplines. The program begins June 16 and continues through Aug. 1. The program is offered to rising students entering grades 7, 8 or 9.   • Sight and Sound Program — This program is a community documentation initiative that gives students an opportunity to learn about emerging trends in new media. Students learn how to communicate more effectively, to develop teamwork skills and to learn community leadership responsibilities. The Sight and Sound program uses digital technology to create a community documentary. Participants in the program should be rising students who are entering grades 10, 11 or 12 and who live in South Dallas. The program starts June 9 and ends Aug. 1. Classes are held Tuesday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.  Students who participate earn three college credit hours.
