Doug Hawthorne

For immediate release — Dec. 14, 2009

(DALLAS) — Doug Hawthorne, president and CEO of Texas Health Resources — one of the largest nonprofit health care systems in Texas — has been selected to serve as the new chairman of the Dallas County Community College District Foundation’s board of directors. He replaces Valerie Freeman, CEO of Imprimus Group (a staffing agency based in Dallas, Fort Worth and Houston), who has served as chair since January 2006.

Hawthorne, chair-elect of the DCCCD Foundation board’s executive team since January 2006, was voted chairman by the board during its annual meeting on Dec. 1. Freeman will continue to serve on the board’s executive leadership team as immediate past chair.

The board’s leadership change comes during the initial phase of a multimillion-dollar campaign that seeks to support six strategic initiatives that strengthen the excellence of the district’s seven colleges. Those initiatives focus on improving quality in the health professions; green economy; science, technology, engineering and mathematics; the arts; the district’s new community campuses; and athletic complexes at DCCCD’s Mountain View and Richland colleges.

“Valerie Freeman knows us better than almost anyone. She started her career as a faculty member at [DCCCD’s] El Centro College before she created her own successful business,” said Betheny Reid, associate vice chancellor of DCCCD’s development office and foundation president. “We will continue to benefit from her energy and commitment because she has agreed to remain with us as an officer of the foundation.

“Doug is a longtime leader with DCCCD, where he developed innovative programs between Texas Health Resources and El Centro’s allied health and nursing programs,” Reid added. “While chairing the finance committee for our successful bond election in 2004, he recognized there was more support that would benefit DCCCD.”

The DCCCD Foundation also welcomes six new board members who are distinguished civic and business leaders in the community. They are Henry C. (Peter) Beck III, Jack Matthews, Carlos González Peña, Lynn McBee, Judy Pesek and Margaret (Marnie) Wildenthal. (See profiles and photos of the new board members on the Foundation Web site.)

For the first time in its history, the foundation also has added a DCCCD administrative and student representative to serve on its board of directors. Doris Rousey, executive dean of the science and mathematics division at Brookhaven College, and Alexander Nelson, a recipient of the foundation’s R. Jan LeCroy Scholarship and a business student at Eastfield College, join the 42-member board.
