For immediate release — March 18, 2010

(DALLAS) — The U.S. Census Bureau wants you — people from the Dallas area who would like to make $13 to $18 an hour this spring, part time, in your community. More than 1,600 positions are available as enumerators (census takers), crew leaders, recruiting assistants, census clerks and crew leader assistants.

Census forms are in the mail, and April marks the start of efforts to capture information from people who do not return their census forms. To qualify for these part-time jobs, interested people must take a test, qualify and then take four days of paid training.

Testing for these part-time census jobs will be held at several Dallas County Community College District locations (during DCCCD Census Days) on March 24 and 25, 2010.

“DCCCD is excited to be a community partner in the 2010 Census efforts, and we are pleased to provide multiple testing opportunities for everyone who is interested in working part time for the U.S. Census Bureau this spring,” said Carla Ranger, DCCCD’s executive director for community partnerships. “By providing a number of sites for testing, we hope that area residents and our students will take the test and secure employment with the U.S. Census Bureau as we observe DCCCD Census Days on March 24 and 25.”

People interested in taking the test must be 18 years old and can review a practice exam (PDF - 204KB) that is posted online.

The schedule for DCCCD locations where testing is available on March 24-25 is listed below.

Please arrive early to fill out paperwork and remember to bring two proper forms of identification: driver’s license or ID card issued by a state or outlying possession of the United States (which contains a photograph or information such as name, date of birth, gender, height, eye color and address); ID card issued by a federal, state or local government agency or entity, provided it contains a photograph or information such as name, date of birth, gender, height, eye color and address; school ID card with a photograph; voter’s registration card; U.S. military card or draft record; military dependent’s ID card; U.S. Coast Guard Merchant Mariner Card; Native American tribal document; driver’s license issued by a Canadian government authority. (In some instances — like a U.S. passport, for example — only one form of ID is needed.)

You may qualify for a census job if:

  • You are able to read, write and speak English.
  • You are a U.S. citizen.
  • You are a legal permanent resident, or noncitizen with an appropriate work visa, and you possess a bilingual skill for which there are no available qualified U.S. citizens.
  • You are at least 18 years old.
  • You have a valid Social Security number.
  • You take a written test of basic skills.
  • You have a valid driver’s license.
  • You pass a background check.
  • You commit to four days of training. You will be paid for training days. Training can be held either during daytime hours or during evening and weekend hours.

The U.S. Constitution requires the federal government to take a national census once every 10 years. This year, the census form involves only 10 questions: it’s easy, it’s important (for future federal funding in every community) and it’s safe. Answers are protected by law.
