(DALLAS) — Journalists, authors and poets provide a window on the world for others. Their views influence and educate the masses, and college students learn from them as well. Authorspeak, a series presented by the Dallas Public Library and the World Affairs Council of Dallas/Fort Worth, kicks off its series of writers’ forums on Thursday, May 6, and the Dallas County Community College District is an education partner this year in those efforts.
DCCCD students and employees, as well as members of the general public, are invited to attend the series, scheduled at several locations over the course of the program. Tickets are $25 per event for members of the World Affairs Council and the Library Friends and $40 for nonmembers. Series tickets also are available at a cost of $85 for members and $145 for nonmembers, which also includes early bird and series discounts.
Energy journalist
Robert Bryce, author of “Power Hungry: The Myths of Green Energy and the Real Fuels of the Future,” kicks off the series on May 6 with a 6 p.m. reception and a 6:30 p.m. discussion at the Dallas Central Library, 1515 Young St., in the first floor auditorium. His presentation will be followed by a book signing. He is the author of two other books — “Gusher of Lies: The Dangerous Delusions of Energy Independence” and “Pipe Dreams: Greed, Ego, and the Death of Enron” — and numerous articles that have been published in Atlantic Monthly, the Wall Street Journal, the New York Times and the Washington Post.

David Sanger, chief Washington correspondent for the New York Times and author of “The Inheritance: The World Obama Confronts and the Challenges to American Power” — June 14, 6 p.m. reception, followed by 6:30 p.m. presentation and book signing, Rosewood Crescent Hotel, 400 Crescent Court. Sanger was a member of two Pulitzer-prizewinning teams; he also has received a number of awards for investigative, national security and White House reporting.

Luis Alberto Urrea, poet/essayist and author of 11 books, including the best-seller “The Devil’s Highway” — June 22, 11:30 a.m. luncheon and book signing, Dallas Central Library, O’Hara Room (7th floor). Urrea’s first book, “Across the Wire,” was named a New York Times Notable Book and also won the Christopher Award. His most recent book is “The Hummingbird’s Daughter.”

Ussama Makdisi, author of “Faith Misplaced: The Broken Promise of U.S.-Arab Relations, 1820-2003” — June 30, 6 p.m. reception and 6:30 p.m. presentation and book signing, Dallas Central Library, first floor auditorium. Makdisi is the Arab American Educational Foundation Professor of History at Rice University; he was named a 2009 Carnegie Scholar for his contributions to the country’s discourse on Islam. He also is the author of “Artillery from Heaven,” which won the 2009 John Hope Franklin Prize.
