(DALLAS) — High school students are busy people. Juniors and seniors are thinking about proms and graduation. Other students are busy texting, doing homework, going to a Friday night football game or planning for an upcoming date. Their social schedules are intertwined with social networking. But they do need to look ahead, plan for the future and learn more about the steps they should take to earn a college degree.

The Keys to Success/Las Llaves del Éxito is a free, one-day college fair for families presented by Dr Pepper, in partnership with the Dallas County Community College District, the Dallas Independent School District and the University of North Texas at Dallas (host site). The event will provide students with the keys they need to succeed in higher education, including information about how to navigate the system so that they can attend a college or university. Focusing on students in grades eight through 12, the free program will be held on Saturday, Oct. 27, 2012, from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at UNT Dallas, 7300 University Hills Blvd. Registration is scheduled in Building 7400, located on the south side of the campus. Parents are invited, and breakfast will be provided.

Other partners include the University of Texas at Dallas, the Greater Dallas Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, Education Is Freedom, The Advancement Group, Capital One Bank University Crossroads, Mega 107.5, McDonald’s, Texas A&M University-Commerce, the Oak Cliff Chamber of Commerce, Dallas County Schools, LULAC National Educational Services Centers Inc., Univision, El Centro College, the University of North Texas, Texas Woman’s University and the University of Texas at Arlington.

In addition to sessions about preparing for college, deciding on a career pathway and understanding financial aid (FAFSA/TASFA), students can apply for the Dr Pepper Tuition Giveaway and meet MEGA 107.5 radio personality Shoboy. Several parent workshops are scheduled in English and Spanish as well.

More than 1,100 participants attended last year’s fall event, and more than 200 volunteers will work with students and their parents this year, providing practical information to help them become college-bound. (A related spring event will be scheduled specifically for high school juniors and seniors.)

College representatives, admissions specialists and financial aid advisors will talk to families about the application process and steps they need to take to be considered for admission and financial aid.
