At midnight on Oct. 1, the federal government officially shut down after Congress failed to agree on a federal budget. The shutdown is indefinite and will continue until Congress passes a budget bill for fiscal year 2014.
However, according to the Department of Education, the Federal Pell Grant and Federal Direct Loan programs should not be affected.
