(DALLAS) — Dr. Joe May, seventh chancellor of the Dallas County Community College District, began his tenure today as CEO of one of the largest community college systems in Texas. Selected by DCCCD’s board of trustees as the district’s new leader last fall, May hit the ground running as he began promoting higher education, DCCCD, access, workforce development and business partnerships.
The Texas native, who was born in Mount Pleasant and raised in Naples, told DCCCD employees who work at the downtown district office, “The work we do — which is critical — changes lives, impacts communities and makes businesses succeed.”
He added, “DCCCD is among the best community colleges in the United States. The district has changed millions of lives during its 50-year history. I am proud to be named chancellor of this district, which has some of the best leaders who share the same values about education. We are giving communities hope — and we are making a better world for all of us. Our communities and our students can take pride in what they do as they work to achieve the American dream. Their best shot comes by going through the doors of any of the seven colleges in our DCCCD system.”
The former president of the Louisiana Community and Technical College System kicked off his first day on the job meeting with DCCCD employees, calling community leaders and visiting with students at El Centro College.
On Monday, before he officially assumed his duties as chancellor, May participated in an education and workforce roundtable with Michael Williams, commissioner of education, Texas Education Agency; Dr. Raymund Paredes, commissioner of the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board; and Andres Alcantar, chairman and commissioner representing the public from the Texas Workforce Commission. At the conclusion of the roundtable discussion, he and the commissioners toured one of the manufacturing facilities at Texas Instruments.
In the coming days, May will continue to meet with area education and city leaders, business owners and other key groups that can partner with DCCCD to provide students with the tools they need to build successful careers and communities.
