(MESQUITE) — Last night, just before 10 p.m., two Eastfield College police
officers were involved in an altercation with an individual — not a student — who was trespassing on campus in a hallway of the C Building. One officer questioned the trespasser, who attacked the officer with a weapon; another officer arrived to provide backup and was attacked as well. The suspect fled the scene toward Motley Drive, pursued by both of the Eastfield police officers; the Mesquite Police Department received a request for assistance from Eastfield and responded. Both EFC officers received lacerations and were transported to Baylor University Medical Center for medical care.

The officers involved were Sgt. Melissa Jacobs, who has served on the college’s police force for four years, and Officer Elias Reymundo, who has served with EFC PD for two years. Both remain hospitalized this morning with serious but non-life-threatening injuries. Other area law enforcement agencies assisted with the search for the suspect, and the Garland Police Department provided canine officers to assist with the search as well.

Mesquite police officers apprehended the suspect in a nearby neighborhood and transported him to the hospital to treat hand wounds.

Dr. Joe May, chancellor of the Dallas County Community College District, and Dr. Jean Conway, president of Eastfield College, visited the officers this morning and are pleased to report that both appear to be doing well. We thank these officers — and all officers in our college police departments — for everything they do to protect us each day. Our thoughts are with them.

Updates will be provided as more information becomes available on the Eastfield College and DCCCD websites.

Update — Nov. 6, 2014

Sgt. Melissa Jacobs and Officer Elias Reymundo both have been released from the hospital and are home recovering. The suspect is in jail. The entire DCCCD family is keeping them in their thoughts and looking forward to their return to duty.
