(DALLAS) — The Dallas County Community College District will celebrate Constitution Day in September with programs, giveaways and entertainment on its college campuses. Lectures and panel discussions about the U.S. Constitution are some of the activities planned. A list of Constitution Day activities on Thursday, Sept. 17, listed by college, is provided below:
Brookhaven College
Brookhaven College will welcome a speaker for a combined session on “Slavery and the Constitution” that will be discussed as part of the college’s Institute for Political Studies and its Open Book project. The selected Open Book for this year is “A Crime So Monstrous” by E. Benjamin Skinner. Brookhaven College is located at 3939 Valley View Lane in Farmers Branch/Dallas.
Cedar Valley College
Cedar Valley College will host a Constitution Day trivia contest for students, faculty and staff, from 12:30 to 2 p.m. in the courtyard. Prizes will be awarded. Cedar Valley College is located at 3030 N. Dallas Ave. in Lancaster.
Eastfield College
Eastfield College, located at 3737 Motley Drive in Mesquite, will observe Constitution Day with a special panel comprising students and professionals who will discuss “The Implications of Open Carry” in room 295, C Building, at 11:30 a.m. Students also will be able to register to vote in “The Pit” on campus from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 21, and from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 22. El Centro College
El Centro College will host Adam McGough, ECC faculty member and Dallas City Council member, as featured speaker for Constitution Day. The program begins at 12:30 p.m. in the Performance Hall (Building C), followed by cake in the Student Center. El Centro College is located at 801 Main St. in downtown Dallas. Mountain View College
Mountain View College has scheduled a main event and several support events for its 2015 Constitution Day celebration. The main event will feature a panel of experts, hosted by Jonathan York, MVC professor; they will discuss “What Is a More Perfect Union: Militia, Bearing Arms and Infringement.” They will look closely at and discuss the Second Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. The program will be held from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the Treetop Lounge.
Supporting events include: a display in the library featuring books and other media related to the U.S. Constitution; distribution of pocket editions of the Constitution during the main event and at the Office of Student Life; and a showing of the PBS special “A More Perfect Union” at 9 a.m. in the Treetop Lounge. North Lake College
North Lake College will combine activities for Constitution Day with a Welcome Back celebration on Sept. 17. The Welcome Back party for students will be held from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. in the Student Life Center, where all members of the North Lake College community can enjoy free food and music. The college’s veterans affairs coordinator, Skip Ragler, will host a Constitution Day Game Show. One-minute speeches focusing on “What America Means to Me” will begin at 2 p.m., and students will receive prizes for the top speeches. Voter registration will be offered throughout the entire day’s event. North Lake College is located at 5001 N. McArthur Blvd. in Irving.
Richland College
Richland College will hold a Constitution Day Contest from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the school’s cafeteria. Students will have a chance to answer questions about the Constitution and about U.S. history and win prizes. (The college also welcomed Latino demographer Jorge Chapa on Monday, Sept. 14, as part of Constitution Day activities.) Richland College is located at 12800 Abrams Road in Dallas.
