(DALLAS) — Dallas County Community College District students and educators associated with the international honor society Phi Theta Kappa continue to shine. In late April, PTK members from DCCCD brought home awards from the honor society’s annual international convention at the Gaylord National Hotel in Washington, D.C.
PTK is an honor society that encourages academic excellence among two-year college students; it comprises more than 3 million members and nearly 1,300 chapters in nine countries. Almost 4,000 students and advisors attended the convention.
Cedar Valley College’s Alpha Zeta Omicron chapter was first runner-up for the international honor of Most Distinguished Chapter. North Lake College placed ninth in the same category.
College administrators also were honored for supporting their local college chapters. The Michael Bennett Lifetime Achievement Award was given to Dr. Jennifer Wimbish, president of Cedar Valley College. Anna Mays, DCCCD’s associate vice chancellor of educational policy for student success, received the Distinguished Administrator Award. The Shirley B. Gordon Award for College Presidents was presented to Dr. Jean Conway, president of Eastfield College, and Dr. Christa Slejko, president of North Lake College.
The Paragon Award for New Advisors was given to Darius Frasure of Mountain View College and Candace Eldridge of North Lake College.
Rebekah Rios-Harris from Cedar Valley College won the Continued Excellence Award for Advisors. The Distinguished Advisor Team Award was presented to Dr. Tommy Thompson, Rebekah Rios-Harris, Miyoshi Holmes and Carolyn Ward, all from Cedar Valley. Dr. Yolanda Romero of North Lake College earned the Advisor Emeritus award.
