DALLAS—The Brookhaven Courier editors and staff brought home 40 awards from the 2017 Texas Community College Journalism Association Convention held Oct. 6 in Arlington. This sets a new all-time record number of awards for the Courier and Windmill staff at TCCJA, up from 33 awards in 2016 and 24 awards in 2015.

Competitions included content published over the past year as well as on-site live contests. The Brookhaven team of writers, editors, photographers, graphic designers and illustrators captured 13 first place awards overall and placed in all but one of the live contests competing against newspaper staffs from community colleges around Texas.

Daniel Rodrigue, Brookhaven College journalism professor, shared the contest results via campus email.

"Obviously, I continue to be amazed at the work our editors and staff have accomplished," Rodrigue said noting that the support of the Brookhaven community plays a vital part in the success of the Courier staff. "Thank you for all that each of you do to support the campus and Brookhaven's students by doing cool things and hosting newsworthy events that our student reporters then transform into award-winning stories."

TCCJA represents 28 member schools with journalism programs or student newspapers including Kilgore, North Lake, Eastfield and Richland colleges.
