DALLAS - Brookhaven College was elected as the President School for 2017-2018 at the Texas Junior College Student Government Association (TJCSGA) state convention March 30 – April 2 in Houston. Sonia Aguilera was selected by the Brookhaven delegation to serve in the role as president.

Aguilera attended Tarrant County College before coming to Brookhaven College in spring 2016. She selected Brookhaven because she wanted to continue her education in a community college and the location was convenient. She is pursuing an associate degree in business finance and plans to transfer to a four-year university to complete her bachelor's degree.

She currently serves as vice president for the Brookhaven College Student Government Association (SGA). She will hold the position of state president for the 2017-2018 academic year.

"Although this was unexpected, it is not an opportunity that I am going to take lightly at all.  The last president did a really great job, so I have big shoes to fill," Aguilera said. "I ended up at Brookhaven almost by accident, but this opportunity elevates my appreciation for the school."

Brookhaven served as President School in 2011-2012, Vice President School in 2016-2017 and Parliamentarian School in 2013-2014. Brian Borski, director of student life, served two terms as advisor to the state executive board from 2015-2017.

"I am really excited that our peers elected us to this position. We've been involved with the organization for the past six years, and I look forward to working with Sonia as she steps up into this important role," Borski said.

TJCSGA is a student organization representing more than 70 member colleges and 700,000 students across the state. Chartered in 1970, the group strives to promote the cause of community college students at every level, according to the organization's website.
