(DALLAS) — A historic solar eclipse will be seen across the United States on Monday, Aug. 21, and eager Dallas residents and Dallas County Community College District students and employees will be able to view the event safely at Brookhaven, Eastfield and Mountain View colleges.

Each college has set aside several hours to watch the progress of the eclipse; the Dallas area will see an 80 percent partial eclipse after lunch that day at 1:09 p.m.

Here's what each college has planned:

  • Brookhaven College — Presented by the Brookhaven College astronomy department, the solar eclipse viewing will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 2:45 p.m. between Buildings K and X. The astronomy department is setting up telescopes that will allow safe viewing of the sun by participants. Brookhaven College is located at 3939 Valley View Lane in Farmers Branch. After 10 a.m. on Monday, call 972-860-4301 to check if weather will affect viewing.
  • Eastfield College — Organized by physics professor Dr. Saeed Ahmad in the Eastfield College STEM division, the solar eclipse viewing will be held between Buildings G and F on campus. The event starts with an 11 a.m. talk about safety rules for viewing the sun (rooms G101 and G102), followed by the eclipse viewing itself from 11:40 a.m. to 2:39 p.m. Solar eclipse viewing glasses will be provided. Eastfield College is located at 3737 Motley Drive in Mesquite. For updates, contact Dr. Ahmad at SaeedAhmad@dcccd.edu or at 972-391-1071.
  • Mountain View College — Presented by the MVC Astrophysics Club, the solar eclipse viewing will be set up from 11:39 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Student Services courtyard between Buildings S and W. Free solar eclipse viewing glasses will be provided, and a number of books from the college library will be provided on tables at that location for students and community members to read more about astronomy and solar eclipses. Mountain View College is located at 4849 W. Illinois Ave. in Dallas. For more information, contact Bob Stallman, Mountain View College STEM division, at 214-860-8505.
