(DALLAS) – Rob Wendland, general counsel for the Dallas County Community College District, has been named one of the city’s “Top 50 General Counsels” by the National Diversity Council. The announcement was made Sept. 12. The award recipients are on “a definitive list of executives, influencers and achievers impacting the legal industry,” according to the council.

“The 2017 Top 50 General Counsel award list highlights some of the most extraordinary legal professionals in the Dallas area,” said Dennis Kennedy, founder and chair of the National Diversity Council. “We are honored to recognize such a distinguished group of leaders who are dedicated to continuous success in their workplaces and communities.”

“The Dallas County Community College District is proud to have Rob Wendland represent us in all legal matters,” said Dr. Joe May, DCCCD’s chancellor. “His expertise helps us serve our students, employees and the community every day and to support diversity across the district.”

Wendland said, “I am proud to be recognized and to share this distinction with so many fine general counsels from throughout Dallas. I am committed, as is DCCCD, to fostering an environment of inclusiveness and diversity. I believe that the promotion of those goals is the foundation for everything we do.”

The 2017 Top 50 General Counsel selection is based on these criteria:

  • serves as a general counsel or a chief legal officer;
  • demonstrates achievements across the full spectrum of in-house responsibility;
  • performs above and beyond the usual requirements of his or her professional capability;
  • shows commitment to diversity and community well-being;
  • displays high integrity and ethical behavior.

Awardees will be honored during Dallas Legal Diversity Week, Nov. 7-9, 2017.

Wendland joined DCCCD as legal counsel on Jan. 27, 2014. Before that, he was a shareholder in and president of the firm of Rapier, Wilson and Wendland, PC, based in Allen, Texas.

A native of Green Bay, Wisconsin, Wendland has practiced law in Texas since 1983, representing a diverse group of clients, from governmental entities and educational institutions to large companies and banks, as well as individuals and small businesses.  He earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of Wisconsin and his juris doctor from the Dedman School of Law at Southern Methodist University.
