News brief

(DALLAS) — The Texas Workforce Commission has awarded a $296,537 Jobs and Education for Texans grant to Cedar Valley College to help CVC purchase and install equipment that will provide 930 students with training for careers in the automotive services profession. The grant also will be used to initiate a partnership between the college and Snap-on Tools, which supports CVC’s automotive program.

Charletta Compton, chair of the Dallas County Community College District’s board of trustees, and state Rep. Helen Giddings joined Julian Alvarez III, Texas Workforce Commissioner representing labor, and Dr. Joe Seabrooks, president of Cedar Valley College, for the check signing and presentation.

“One of our key objectives at Cedar Valley College is to support workforce initiatives in our region,” said Seabrooks. “We are always seeking ways to develop partnerships and leverage resources toward achieving that aim. We are pleased to be a part of this grant, which will provide great opportunities for our students in the automotive work space.”

The JET program provides funding for equipment to eligible educational institutions for the purpose of developing career and technical education courses and may include course offerings in dual credit and technical education programs. The equipment must be used to train students in high-demand occupations that include auto mechanics and auto body repair specialists, according to the TWC.
