(DALLAS) — Art, music, literature and lectures are among the activities featured during Black History Month throughout the Dallas County Community College District. All seven colleges in the system will offer events; most are free and open to the public, unless otherwise noted.

Brookhaven College

Tuesday, Feb. 14 — African-American Read-in: “Poetry and Prose That Historically Responds to the Times” begins at 10:30 a.m. in the Performance Hall.

Tuesday, Feb. 21 — Speak Up!, an open forum for students, takes place at noon in the Treetop Café.

Wednesday, Feb. 22 — A Taste of Soul and Poetry Slam begins at 11:30 a.m. in the Performance Hall.

Eastfield College

Wednesday, Feb. 16 — Members of the campus and local communities are invited to participate in a panel discussion titled “The Crisis in Law and Order," which begins at 11 a.m. in room C135. Panelists include government and criminal justice faculty members Glynn Newman, Stacey Jurhree, Anthony Carr and Patrick Patterson. Dallas resident Richard Miles, who was wrongfully imprisoned for crimes he did not commit, also will participate as a panelist. The moderator is history professor Liz Nichols.

Tuesday, Feb. 21 — Eastfield’s African-American Read-in begins at 12:30 p.m. in rooms S100/101.

Monday, Feb. 27 — “The Mountaintop” by Kaori Hall will be performed at 11 a.m. on Feb. 27. Additional shows are scheduled at 8 a.m. on Feb. 28 and at 7 p.m. on March 2, 3 and 4. All shows will be staged in the Performance Hall.

Monday, Feb. 20 — The college’s African-American Read-In begins at 12:30 p.m. in the Treetop Lounge. A Project Jubilee Trip also is scheduled and will be held off campus.

Wednesday, Feb. 15 — “My Words Healed My Soul” — Author and life coach Keya McClain will share her views on education and personal development from 12:30 to 2 p.m. in room H226 in the Student Life Center. The Dallas-based author of “My Words Healed My Soul” will host a performance and book signing.

Wednesday, Feb. 22 — The college will host its African-American Read-In from 12:30 to 2 p.m. in room H200 (Student Life Center). Students, staff and faculty will share their personal perspective about the crisis in black education. Desserts will be served.

Thursday, Feb. 16 — A professional networking workshop will be held from 12:30 to 1:50 p.m. in Sabine Hall, Room 118. A “Dress for Success” presentation is scheduled for 2 to 3 p.m. in the same location.
